The reveal of Jodie Whittaker as the Thirteenth Doctor has received an enormous amount of attention from the press and fans alike, and that has been reflected in the online viewing numbers that the BBC have released.
The teaser clip that announced the identity of the new Doctor had about 4.6 million viewers when it aired during coverage of the Wimbledon men’s final on BBC One, and that’s been supplemented by 9.8 million views on Facebook and 2.5 million views on Twitter for the video.
The clip was retweeted over 100,000 times and liked about 175,000 times on the official Doctor Who and BBC One Twitter accounts combined.
Piers Wenger, BBC One Drama Controller, weighed in on the numbers:
To see the overwhelmingly positive response to the news that Jodie Whittaker will star as the Thirteenth Doctor, and know that the reveal has had over sixteen million views online so far, is just phenomenal. It’s exhilarating to see Doctor Who engaging with people on so many different levels and I cannot wait for the audience to see her in action on BBC ONE this Christmas.
