In recent years, we’ve been lucky to see missing episodes being brought to life using animation, with The Power of the Daleks, Shada and The Macra Terror all recreating episodes with the help of surviving audio.
Following the success of these partly-animated releases, The Faceless Ones will be released on DVD, Blu-Ray and as an exclusive Steelbook next year.
First broadcast in six weekly parts from April to May 1967, The Faceless Ones was the eighth serial from Season Four of Doctor Who, starring Patrick Troughton as the Doctor facing off against a race of identity-stealing aliens known as the Chameleons.
Only two of the six episodes survive in the BBC film archives, with snippets of footage and still images existing from the other four. Off-air recordings of the soundtrack also exist, meaning animators can recreate the visuals based on the audio.
The six new animated episodes are being made in full colour and high definition and will be released on DVD and Blu-ray in 2020. The DVD and Blu-ray release will also include surviving archive material from the original 1967 production.
The Faceless Ones is available to pre-order here.
