David Tennant who formerly and famously played the tenth Doctor from 2005 to 2010 has had the chance to work closely with Jodie Whittaker during the filming of the popular television drama Broadchurch. This puts him in the perfect position to speculate over what Whittaker’s take on the Doctor will be like.
Tennant has said he was “delighted” to learn that Whittaker was taking over as the new Doctor for series 11. He’s gone on to claim “she’s so right for it and she’s so ready for it”. Tennant assures fans that Chibnall’s choice is going to be ejoyable by explaining, “I think what the world will discover is just how funny and anarchic and crazy Jodie can be and that I’m sure she will channel into this part with great aplomb – it’s going to be fantastic.”
The 46 year old actor learnt of the casting choice last year during a call with the new Doctor Who show runner, Chris Chibnall, who also worked with Tennant and Whittaker on Broadchurch. “Chris called me up and said: ‘The new Doctor would like to chat, is that OK? I’ve given her your number.’ I said, ‘all right,’ and the next phone call I get, Jodie’s name comes up”, Tennant recalls. As for whether or not he had his suspicions prior to this call, the actor states, “I suppose I was wondering, because Chris Chibnall used to write Broadchurch and Jodie Whittaker was on Broadchurch, so I was sort of beginning to put two and two together a little bit before I found out the news.”
“She’s such a great choice. I’m hoping the public will get to see sides of Jodie that she’s often kept hidden in the brilliantly sort of detailed character studies that she presents to the world.” – David Tennant
Tennant goes on to predict that Jodie’s Doctor may have a dash of humour to her in an interview with Heart Scotland, suggesting “There’s a madness to Jodie, she’s one of the funniest people, so I think we’ll get to enjoy some of that in the Doctor”. Though Tennant doesn’t know for sure what series 11 will bring, he does say that he is thrilled to see what the show will look like and what sort of stories this new era will bring.
We will all have to wait and see what Whittaker’s Doctor will be like and what adventures she brings with her. New episodes air this Autumn with the premiere of series 11 of Doctor Who.
