The BBC’s adoption of the Internet age will soon take another huge step this Autumn when the corporation launches the BBC Store. This new web service will offer permanent downloads for many of the BBC’s shows, including Doctor Who and Sherlock, often mere hours after new content has been broadcast. The BBC Store will clearly offer competition to Apple’s immensely popular iTunes service, with an estimated 10,000 hours + of content available
once the service leaves its current beta testing phase.
BBC Worldwide, the commercial sub group of the corporation, will take a 70% cut of revenue generated by downloads. The remaining amount will go to independent production companies of each show. The BBC has confirmed its own iPlayer service will not be affected by the upcoming launch of the store.
