Actor Jimmy Vee, who will be appearing in this Saturday’s episode of Doctor Who, The Caretaker, has spoken about filming his role as well as his thoughts on the show as a whole.
Vee has worked with every Doctor since the show’s revival in 2005, including as the Moxx of Balhoon alongside Christopher Eccleston in The End of the World and Bannakaffalatta in David Tennant’s 2007 Christmas special Voyage of the Damned. Most recently he encountered Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor when they both appeared in spin-off show The Sarah Jane Adventures in 2010.
Speaking to the Daily Record about starring with yet another incarnation of the Doctor, who in The Caretaker goes undercover at Coal Hill School, Vee said:
“Peter is great – I got on with him really well, with us both coming from Scotland, you automatically have that link.
“He’s playing it quite naturally – it just feels like he’s playing himself and not changing anything to become the Doctor. He’s just going out to do it his own way, his own natural way.
“None of the Doctors I’ve worked with are trying to be something they’re not – Chris, David and Matt, and now Peter.”
On Saturday Vee will take on the role of the Skovox Blitzer, a robotic villain which is ready to destroy all humanity.
He revealed how his latest costume compared to those he has worn in previous roles on the show:
“It was great to get in and out of, as it only took about 10 minutes to get fitted.
“The worst I’ve had was probably either the Moxx or the Groske, as you got the bodysuit on, and then you would have to sit in the make-up chair for hours.”
Vee also shared his thoughts on the growing global popularity of Doctor Who, which last month embarked on its first ever promotional world tour visiting countries such as Australia and South Korea:
“It just seems to be taking off all over the world now. I know it went out to America, but it’s getting bigger and bigger – I know it’s popular in Scandinavia. They’re getting the new series, and the fans can go back and check out the other series too, from Chris and Dave onwards.”
The Caretaker will air this Saturday at 8:30pm on BBC One.
