Doctor Who: John Barrowman Keen To See A Female Doctor

In a new interview with TV Line, Doctor Who’s John Barrowman has spoken again of his desire to see a woman take on the role of the Doctor. Barrowman, who plays Captain Jack Harkness, has been at the forefront of the campaign for a female Doctor since Matt Smith first announced his intention to depart after the 2013 Christmas Special, and in the interview filmed at the San Diego Comic-Con he reiterated his reasons why he thinks it’s time for a change.

“I think it should be a woman. I think it should be a girl, it’s something different. He’s always been a guy. Let’s try something different. Let’s see if it works. If it doesn’t, you can always regenerate. I did a panel (at San Diego Comic-Con) and someone shouted out, ‘Yeah, but there’s only allowed to be 12 regenerations’. You know what? It’s television and if it’s selling and it’s working, they’ll find a way to make 15 regenerations.”

Barrowman has clearly given the subject plenty of thought, and he also offered his opinions on the type of actress who he feels should be given a chance in the role.

“It’s a pity because someone like Alex Kingston would have been great to be a female Doctor. She’s been so strong with River. They could make that kind of take a backseat and she becomes somebody else. Who knows? I don’t want to say who I think should play it because that’s not my kind of thing. I don’t think it should be a Hollywood A-lister. I think it should be somebody completely random, new and fresh. Let’s put a girl who’s kind of real – a normal-looking girl. Not somebody who looks like she throws up into a bucket every three minutes. Someone who looks like a normal girl.”

Watch the interview in full below, and let us know what you think. Is Barrowman right in saying it’s time to take the show in a fresh direction?
