The latest issue of Radio Times is an ‘exclusive souvenir issue’ marking Twelfth Doctor Peter Capaldi’s departure from Doctor Who later this month.
Capaldi, who will bid farewell to the show during this year’s Christmas Day special Twice Upon A Time, stars on the covers of both the print (below, left) and digital (below, right) editions of the magazine (9-15 December) – fittingly his twelfth Radio Times cover during his time as the Doctor.
Inside the magazine is a six-page Doctor Who feature including interviews with departing executive producer Steven Moffat as well as Capaldi’s Twice Upon A Time co-star David Bradley, who takes on the role of the First Doctor in this year’s festive special.
Bradley, who also co-starred with Capaldi’s successor Jodie Whittaker in ITV’s Broadchurch, comments on the decision to cast her as the Thirteenth Doctor:
“When I heard it was Jodie I thought, “Well, that’s perfect” – because she’s got the range and she’s funny. They just need to keep that sense of fun and not forget the comic energy.”
Moffat, meanwhile, explains why – despite casting Michelle Gomez as the first female incarnation of the Master during his time as showrunner – the opportunity never presented itself to do the same with the role of the Doctor:
“If we’d replaced David Tennant with a woman it wouldn’t have worked. It was too early. We could have replaced Matt Smith with a woman, given that his Doctor was more sexless and less of a lad, but then I got obsessed with seeing Peter in the Tardis.”
The issue also features a retrospective on Radio Times’ coverage of the Twelfth Doctor’s era and an exclusive photoshoot featuring Capaldi and Bradley in character, photographed by Richard Grassie and art directed by Stuart Manning on a set recreating the South Pole base from First Doctor adventure The Tenth Planet.
The new issue of Radio Times is out from today – Saturday 2nd December – throughout the United Kingdom. The bumper two-week Christmas edition of Radio Times (23rd December – 5th January) will be available in London and the South East from Saturday 9th December before rolling out nationwide on Tuesday 12th December.
