Director Rachel Talalay will be returning to Doctor Who for this year’s Christmas special, Steven Moffat has revealed.
The show’s executive producer and lead writer made the announcement as part of an interview with Huffington Post, which turned to the topic of the director and her work on Doctor Who:
I’m working with her right now, actually: we’re just finishing up on the finale episodes, and planning the Christmas one, which she’s also directing — which is my very last one.
Talalay later confirmed the news via Twitter:
Yes, thrilled to be doing #DoctorWho Xmas episode (and what a script!). Very sad it’s our last.

Talalay has previously directed the series 8 and 9 two-part finales, and has also helmed the last two episodes of the currently-airing tenth series, World Enough and Time and The Doctor Falls.
Although further details on this year’s Christmas special are as yet unknown, the episode is set to be a momentous one as it not only marks Steven Moffat’s final episode as showrunner, but is also set to see the departure of Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth Doctor.
