Doctor Who: Spyfall – What we know so far

While the countdown to Christmas is underway, Whovians are also counting down to New Year’s Day, when the Thirteenth Doctor will finally return to our screens. We’ve had some teasers and announcements regarding the special, so here’s what we know so far.

The first episode of Series 12 is called Spyfall – a suitable name for what looks to be a love letter to the James Bond films.

The 65 minute first part of the two-parter will air on Wednesday 1st January 2020 at 6:55pm on BBC1, with the second half airing on Sunday 5th January. This makes the episode the first two-parter for Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor.

The recent trailer showed Stephen Fry, who has been confirmed to be appearing in this episode, playing some kind of authority figure in a secret organisation that hires the Thirteenth Doctor and her team to complete a mission.

We then see the gang in some very fetching tuxedos and the Doctor channels 007 by introducing herself:

“The name’s Doctor…THE Doctor.”

Clips also show the Doctor and her companions on motorbikes riding through a vineyard whilst being chased by a gun wielding Lenny Henry.

The episode is clearly meant to be a pastiche of James Bond, but will the episode go as far as The Return of Doctor Mysterio or The Doctor, The Widow and the Wardrobe with their references?
