Overnight figures have revealed that episode 2, The Ghost Monument, was watched by 7.11 million viewers.
This gave the show a 33.4% share of the total TV audience, making it the third most watched programme of the week, once again beaten only by two episodes of Strictly Come Dancing (with 9.2 million viewers).
Although the figure is considerably lower than the series opener, this is to be expected from a series launch and is still an impressive figure, with the next highest ratings for the channel being Countryfile with 4.94 million viewers and The Cry with 4.59 million.
Meanwhile on ITV, Bradley Walsh was also bringing in the viewers, with 4.8 million watching the celebrity edition of The Chase which aired directly opposite Doctor Who. ITV’s highest rated programme last night was The X-Factor, with 5.1 million viewers.
The official figures next Monday, which will include those who recorded the episode and watched it later.
