Former Doctor Who Companion For New Netflix Series

Former Doctor Who and Torchwood actress Freema Agyeman has been cast in new Netflix series Sense8.

Agyeman, who played companion Martha Jones alongside David Tennant’s Tenth Doctor in 2007, joins fellow British actors Tuppence Middleton and Aml Ameen in the show, which further bolsters its cult credentials with the addition of Brian J Smith (Stargate Universe) and Naveen Andrews (Lost).

Sense8 is the latest project from Andy and Lana Wachowski, the duo behind Cloud Atlas and the Matrix film series. They are joined by Babylon 5 creator J Michael Straczynski, who described the new show to Deadline:

The series follows eight characters around the world who, in the aftermath of a tragic death, find themselves linked to each other mentally and emotionally.

They can not only see and talk to each other as though they were in the same place, they have access to each other’s deepest secrets. Not only must they figure out what happened and why and what it means for the future of humanity, they must do so while being hunted by an organization out to capture, kill or vivisect them.

This latest casting news marks a return to sci-fi for Agyeman, following recent roles in television programmes Law and Order: UK and The Carrie Diaries.

Sense8 will be a 10-part series and is expected to debut on Netflix in 2015.
