Christopher Eccleston is widely known throughout Doctor Who for being the fantastic Ninth Doctor, but that isn’t the only role he has played in his acting career. As he hits 50, we review his life so far.
Born on February 16th 1964 in Lancashire, he has had an adventure of a life. Let’s start with his major role in our favourite programme Doctor Who, he took on the giant role of becoming the Ninth Doctor. It was announced that he would play the role on the 2nd of April 2004, being the first actor to play the role of the Doctor since the programmes revival. His first episode ‘Rose’ was broadcasted to over 10 million viewers on the 26th March 2005, he appeared in another 12 more episodes succeeding to ‘Rose’. These episodes also featured Billie Piper (Rose Tyler), John Barrowman (Captain Jack), Noel Clarke (Mickey Smith) and many more. ‘Parting of The Ways’ was his last episode on the programme(to date) and was also the departure of the beloved Ninth Doctor and his fantastic ways.
Following his career on Doctor Who, Eccleston performed in Night Sky in October 2005, a one night play in the ‘Old Vic Theatre’ in London. He featured in a production called ‘New Orleans, Mon Amour’ which was filmed in post-Hurricane Katrina New Orleans, and was shown in America and Italy Film Festivals in 2008. In 2007, Christopher joined NBC’s TV series Heroes. He portrayed the character ‘Claude’ who had the power of invisibility, in the episode “Godsend”.
Eccleston has become many villains in his media career. For example, he played Destro in the G.I. Joe film, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, which was released in 2009. Furthermore, most recently, he portrayed Malekith in Thor: The Dark World, this was the successful sequel to Thor and also the eighth installment to Marvel’s epic cinematic blockbusters.
Christopher has also appeared in ‘The Dark is Rising’, ‘The Sarah Silverman Programme’, ‘Lennon Naked’, ‘The Borrowers’ as well as many other programmes, plays and movies.
Apart from his incredible work in the media business, Eccleston has a wife and is a father. His first child ‘Albert’ was born in February 2012 and is his and his wifes only child.
