It has today been announced by his wife Gaynor that Aubrey Woods, the man who played The Controller in the Day Of The Daleks has passed away aged 85.
The 1972 four part serial saw the Dalek menace return to screens after a five year absence and Jon Pertwee’s third Doctor battle the Controller, a Dalek agent helping the metal protagonists in their devilish plans.
Woods’ career began at the age of 17 playing Smike in the film The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby. In the 1960s he also spent three years on stage as Fagin in another Dickens adaptation, Oliver!
Woods’ found fame with his role playing the sweet shop owner who sang ‘The Candy Man’ in 1971’s film adaptation of the Roald Dahl’s classic, Charlie And The Chocolate Factory.
His stage roles included the part of Jacob and Potiphar and in the 1991
West End revamp of Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Other roles included the theatre musical The Four
Musketeers and in a radio version of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the
Galaxy, whilst he also wrote the play Trelawny in the 1970s.
Aubrey Woods passed away in Barrow In Furness on the 7th of May. A friend of the Daleks and even more so a friend of Doctor Who fans everywhere, rest in peace Aubrey and thanks for the memories.
