Doctor Who companion Pearl Mackie has been discussing her return as Bill Potts in this year’s Christmas special, Twice Upon a Time.
Bill was last seen seemingly exiting the show during the Series 10 finale The Doctor Falls, with alien ‘pilot’ Heather transforming Bill into a similarly non-human being before the pair went off to travel the universe together.
On returning for one final Doctor Who outing, Mackie said:
“It was a total honour to be asked back and it’s even more exciting that it’s for a Christmas special! Bill is 100% back with the full Bill energy, but she’s not quite all she seems…”
Departing showrunner and Twice Upon a Time writer Steven Moffat explained earlier this month why he made the decision to include Bill after all:
“I was 20 pages in to the script, and I thought, ‘I need Bill here. There isn’t a witness for this. The Captain [played by Mark Gatiss] isn’t quite right as the witness. I want to hear what Bill would say.’ I needed that voice back in the show. I just did.
“I missed her terribly. I missed the way Bill reacted to things. Also, if the Twelfth Doctor’s got someone as forthright and irreverent as Bill, you really want the First Doctor to meet her! [Laughs]”
Mackie – who has described the interaction between Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor and David Bradley’s First Doctor as ‘really funny, but also surprising and very moving’ – revealed one of her favourite sets from the special:
“It was very exciting to be on the set of the first Doctor’s TARDIS. It wasn’t something I was that familiar with, but great to get acclimatised on. And apparently there were lots of props that were actually used in the original TARDIS that were used in our set too, so it really does look and feel like the real deal from the first series of Doctor Who over fifty years ago.”
Twice Upon a Time airs on Christmas Day at 5:30pm on BBC One.
