Peter Capaldi Talks Jenna Coleman’s Upcoming Departure From Doctor Who

In an interview with BBC Radio 1, Peter Capaldi discussed Clara’s exit from Doctor Who this season, which was first reported on in September. Capaldi said:

“I don’t want to go into what happens, because it’s very clever what happens in it, but it’s very sad. It’s really sad.

It’s not quite what you thinks going to happen. You think what’s going to happen is going to happen, and then something else happens.

That’s what’s wonderful about Doctor Who. it’s always clever the way these things are done. It’s not quite as straightforward as it appears.”

It sounds as though this will be a very emotional departure for a companion. Capaldi confided that he also got emotional while filming Coleman’s final scenes, saying:

“I don’t usually get very weepy or anything when I’m working, but I found it really sad saying goodbye to her.

I still see her, so it’s not like saying goodbye to Jenna in person, but you sort of say goodbye to the character. It becomes the focus of all your emotion and all of the things that perhaps you’d like to say to that person and how wonderful she’s been to me.”
