Big Finish has seen many characters from the show brought back to life for new adventures, and now it’s the turn of one of a certain companion from the Powell Estate.
After reprising the role of Rose Tyler for the Tenth Doctor Adventures, Billie Piper will now play the character in her own spin-off series.
Rose Tyler: The Dimension Cannon will follow Rose’s journey through dying parallel worlds through the use of a dimension cannon. The cannon was previously mentioned in 2008’s Journey’s End, when it was revealed to be built by the parallel Earth’s Torchwood team.
The four new stories are:
- The Endless Night by Jonathan Morris
- The Flood by Lisa McMullin
- Ghost Machines by AK Benedict
- The Last Party on Earth by Matt Fitton.
Billie Piper said about returning to the role:
“I love how normal Rose is, and yet really extraordinary. She lived a normal average life but she is incredibly curious and has an enormous capacity for love and empathy and is really spirited. She is extraordinary.”
The series also stars Camille Coduri as Rose’s mum Jackie, Shaun Dingwall as her dad Pete, Mark Benton as a parallel Earth version of Clive Finch and Elli Garnett as his wife, Caroline Finch.
Surprisingly, the series will feature no aliens or villains, choosing instead to “capture and showcase the beautifully rich human characters of Doctor Who.”
“That’s the great thing about Doctor Who. It challenges new thinking. It’s progressive and it can be political in amongst these human emotions and relationships. I think that’s its greatest appeal.”

Big Finish producer David Richardson describes the series as “a family drama about the end of worlds. It’s about love and loss and things that might have been – and our brilliant cast have embraced the emotional scripts.”
And according to Richardson it was Russell T Davies himself who suggested exploring her journey to finding the Doctor in The Stolen Earth when Richardson approached him with the idea of a Rose spin-off.
“I found the proposal irresistible, and instantly script editor Matt Fitton and I were throwing around ideas. Russell suggested including Jackie and Pete, and embraced my idea of including a parallel universe version of Clive – who of course was killed off in the TV series [in the 2005 episode ‘Rose’].”
Rose Tyler: The Dimension Cannon will be released in September 2019 and is available to pre-order now – at £25 on CD and £20 on download – from bigfinish.com.
