It has been revealed that actor David Schofield will appear in episodes 5 and 6 of the upcoming series 9: “The Girl Who Died” and “The Woman Who Lived.” These two episodes are currently in production.
Schofield will be playing Odin, the legendary Norse god. Brian Blessed was originally cast in the role, but was forced to drop out due to an illness. Little is known about how large a role Odin will play in the episodes, but it is possible that the two-parter will be a Viking adventure for the Twelfth Doctor and Clara.
Schofield is not a complete stranger to Doctor Who: he has previously lent his voice to Big Finish audio productions. He portrayed Nostradamus in 2011’s The Doomsday Quatrain, and Billy in 2009’s Death in Blackpool.
“The Girl Who Died” is written by Jamie Mathieson (“Mummy on the Orient Express” and “Flatline”) and Steven Moffat. “The Woman Who Lived” is written by Catherine Tregenna (Torchwood). Both episodes are directed by Ed Bazalgette (Poldark).
