Since her debut story arc Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead, the character of River Song has garnered thousands upon thousands of fans worldwide, so it’s no wonder that countless Whovians have been hoping she’ll make a comeback for Series 8 and Peter Capaldi’s era.
Many wonder what River Song’s on-screen chemistry with the Twelfth Doctor would be like, while others feel as if her story hasn’t been explored to the fullest quite yet. So will we be seeing our favourite archaeology professor again in the future?
It seems like Alex Kingston wouldn’t mind it very much.
“Spoilers,” she teases as always.
But while Alex Kingston certainly has a large say in the matter, she alone can’t guarantee the return of River Song. What does showrunner Steven Moffat have to say about her character in the course of the upcoming series?
In a recent interview with Doctor Who Magazine he stated that he remains unsure of whether or not he’ll be bringing her back this coming series, saying:
“It’s always down to whether there’s a good story. My immediate instinct was that story’s probably done. Not that we saw all of it, but I never thought we should see all of it. I’m slightly tempted, because I imagine Peter Capaldi and Alex Kingston would be absolutely hilarious together…”
Seeing the Twelfth Doctor and River Song together would probably be priceless, but is it possible for her to reappear after her death and subsequent goodbye to her beloved Eleventh Doctor? And how would a relationship between River and Twelve differ from the relationship between River and Eleven that we’ve come to know so well? Moffat elaborates:
“She could certainly have met other Doctors. So there’s nothing stopping us… But is there anything new we can do? Or is the new thing that Peter Capaldi and Alex Kingston would be very sexy together? Is that enough? Alex Kingston is the flirtiest character there’s ever been in Doctor Who and she’s in her 50s.”
“We’ve always had fun with the fact that they don’t look like a couple. Peter Capaldi and Alex Kingston would look like a couple – that’s the thing. Whereas I thought Matt and Alex were gorgeous together, but it looked slightly strange, because he was so much younger. Alex is just great fun to have on the show. It’s when you want to throw the Doctor a bit, because what River does so well is to make him a bit on the back foot and a bit flustered.”
While the substance to form a proper return for River Song could certainly be there, her future still remains uncertain. If Steven Moffat whips up a well thought-out story for her, she may be hitting our screens again in Series 8, but until Doctor Who‘s return in August looms nearer, it’s really difficult to say. To quote the Great Curator, who knows?
