A few months ago, someone tweeted us a link to something called Whovians Amino. We were as clueless as you no doubt are right now. However, when we clicked through we discovered it was an app with a whole community of Doctor Who fans from across the world being creative, sharing their views and proving just how inspirational Doctor Who is. A few of us at TGT set up accounts and now, a few months in, I’d like to tell you more about what Whovians Amino app is all about.
Firstly, what is an Amino? It’s essentially a social media for a specific fandom. There are hundreds of Aminos for just about anything you can think of – Harry Potter, Lego, DC Universe, Little Mix and Grand Theft Auto. There’s even a few President Trump Aminos, but let’s not go into that!
You can also follow users and they can follow you. There are public and private chats, where groups of Whovians can gather to talk about topics, participate in role plays or just hang out. If that wasn’t enough, you can also win prizes on there too! Every week there are fun challenges set to write or create something and the winner gets a prize.
As with any social media, there are some people on there posting the same old memes and disagreeing with people’s views, but the Aminos are managed by a team of curators who do a great job at keeping this to a minimum.
So how is this any different from Facebook or Twitter? Well, let me give you an example. I recently posted a photo of a Lego K9 model I’d made on Twitter and 1 person liked it. I posted it on Whovians Amino and over 200 people liked it and 39 people commented on it. The reason: everyone on there is a Doctor Who fan!
There are currently just under 80,000 members on Whovians Amino and every single one of them is a Doctor a Who fan, so it is a great opportunity to meet likeminded people and make friends with people who love the same things as you.
Since I joined, I have made a number of new friends from other countries and amassed a following of people who genuinely like the creative things I do around Doctor Who. As such, I would highly recommend Whovians Amino (and Amino in general) to anyone out there who wishes to find an active part of a fandom and share their passions with others.
